Frequently asked questions

For a readable map, start with the places that structure the hike: trailhead, villages, refuges, campsites, passes, summits, lakes, and finish. Some people prefer a clean poster with 5 to 10 places; others want a more detailed route. Both can work if the map still tells your story. It also works very well for pilgrimages such as the Camino de Santiago, where each stage carries a real memory.

If you have one GPX file, you can also create a run poster if the exact trace is what matters most. For a hiking map poster, the simplest option is usually to add the meaningful stops directly in the travel poster builder and choose walking routes between them: trailheads, villages, refuges, campsites, passes, lakes, summits, and the finish. If you really need to combine several GPX files into one trip, the alternative is to build the full itinerary first in the TraveledMap trip builder, then use that trip as the base for your memory map.

TraveledMap needs place names that can be found geographically. “the nice bivouac after the climb” or “viewpoint near the ridge” are too vague. “Refuge du Col de la Croix du Bonhomme”, “Lac Blanc”, “Chamonix”, or “Corte” are better examples. Search is contextual, so you usually do not need to add the country every time. If a stop still is not found, you can place it manually during the itinerary validation step with the dedicated button.

Yes, photos can make a hiking poster feel much more personal: a campsite, a summit view, the group at the end, or a quiet moment from the trail. This feature is currently available on desktop, but not yet on mobile.

You can create vertical, horizontal, or square posters depending on the shape of your route. We support international A-series formats, such as A4, A3, or A2, as well as more US-oriented print sizes, so the poster can be ordered and printed properly for customers around the world.

If you walked the trail with the person, you can create the poster from the route you shared. If you do not know every stage, ask for the main places, use photos to reconstruct the route together, or offer the idea first. We can also prepare gift cards: simply contact us and we will help you offer the poster without needing every detail upfront.
